During the mid-1980s the company FlowTex was established by and , two businessmen based in the South-Western state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, with the purpose of constructing and operating machines for horizontal drilling. The business idea was profitable and successful as it allowed for the installation of cables and pipes without the need to dig up roads, which would have caused considerable traffic chaos and noise pollution. Bei den Ermittlungen wurden 55 Hausdurchsuchungen durchgeführt und gegen 110 Beschuldigte 123 Verfahren eingeleitet, gegen die vier Haupttäter von mehreren Gerichten Freiheitsstrafen von insgesamt 58 Jahren verhängt, und zwei FDP-Landesminister verloren ihr Amt. Der von Staatsanwälten errechnete Gesamtschaden betrug 4,9 Mrd. DM (kaufkraftbereinigt heute rund 3,5 Mrd. EUR), davon ca. 0,7 Mrd. DM, die drei Tage nach der Verhaftung des Haupttäters Manfred Schmider im Zusammenhang mit der von Commerzbank und Dresdner Bank begebenen FlowTex-Anleihe auf das Konzernkonto geflossen wären. (de)
