- تأسيس مدينة روما هو حدثٌ تاريخي هام لا زال قيد الدراسة، حيث تنقسم المعلومات المتاحة عنه إلى أساطير شديدة القدم وأبحاثٍ آثاريَّة حديثة. رغم قدم الأساطير المدوَّنة عن تأسيس روما الأوَّل، إلا أنَّ أقدمها كتبت بعد مئات السنين من ظهور المدينة الفعليّ، ولذلك فإنَّ الاعتماد عليها غير ممكن، أما المسوحات الآثارية فإن نتائجها تتغيَّر باستمرار مع حدوث الاكتشافات الجديدة. اختلق الرومان حكاية أسطوريَّة طويلة ومعقَّدة عن أصل مدينتهم، واتحدت هذه الحكاية مع كتابات ليفيوس وأشعار ورغيليوس وأوفيد التي أُلِّفَت خلال عهد الإمبراطور أغسطس. وقد جرى تدريجياً دمج هذه النصوص القديمة معاً وتحويلها إلى أسطورة موحَّدة أكثر تفصيلاً. تعتمد بحوث المؤرخين والآثاريِّين الحديثة في جانبٍ منها على تلك الأسطورة القديمة وعلى مصادر مكتوبة أخرى، كما أنها تعتمد على ما اكتشف خلال المسوحات الأثرية الكثيرة من آثار قديمة، وهي لا زالت (ar)

- La fondazione di Roma, altrimenti detta Natale di Roma, è stata fissata al 21 aprile dell'anno 753 a.C., 1 AUC, dal letterato latino Varrone, sulla base dei calcoli effettuati dall'astrologo Lucio Taruzio. Altre leggende, basate su altri calcoli indicano date diverse. In realtà Varrone conosceva bene la Grecia, era stato legato per alcuni anni nella Illiria greca, e come tutti i Romani del primo secolo a.C. aveva numerose date che erano proposte per fissare l'anno della fondazione di Roma, tutte riducibili ad alcuni decenni della fine dell'VIII secolo a.C.. Scelsero il 753 a.C. poiché si collegava alla nascita della democrazia ateniese, che avvenne appunto con l'inizio della nomina degli arconti decennali e poi annuali ad Atene. (it)

Os romanos elaboraram um complexo conto mitológico sobre a origem da cidade e do Estado, que se uniu à obra histórica de Tito Lívio e às obras poéticas de Virgílio e Ovídio, todos da era do imperador Augusto. Naquela época, as lendas oriundas de textos mais antigos foram trabalhadas e fundidas num conto único, no qual o passado mítico foi interpretado em função dos interesses do império.
