A fragipan is a diagnostic horizon in USDA soil taxonomy. They are altered subsurface soil layers that restrict water flow and root penetration. Fragipans are similar to a duripan in how they affect land-use limitations. In soil descriptions, they are commonly denoted by a Bx or Btx symbol. They often form in loess ground. The first record of fragipans is probably that by John Hardcastle in New Zealand in the 1880s.

- Een fragipan (van het Latijnse fragilis, breekbaar) is een brosse, compacte, niet of zwak gecementeerde laag in de bodem. Deze bodemhorizont is minimaal 15 cm dik en belemmert een goede doorstroming van water en de beworteling door planten. Een fragipan is ontstaan door verwering en bodemvormende processen uit het oorspronkelijke moedermateriaal (C-horizont) en niet door verdichting van de bodem. Plantenwortels kunnen alleen langs grote scheuren door een fragipan heen groeien, de wortels dringen niet door in de verharde laag zelf. (nl)
