Franz Crass (9 March 1928 – 23 June 2012) was a German bass singer. A native of Wipperfürth, Rhine Province, Crass studied with in Wiesbaden and with Professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Köln. He won numerous competitions throughout Germany in the 1950s. In 1954, he made his debut at the municipal theater in Krefeld; from 1956 he sang at the Landestheater Hannover. Crass developed hearing problems and as a result, ended his career abruptly in 1981; after that he devoted himself to coaching younger singers. He died in Rüsselsheim, in 2012, aged 84.

De 1956 à 1962, il chante à l'opéra de Hanovre, de 1962 à 1964 à l'opéra de Cologne, et à partir de 1964 il ne chante plus que sur invitation, notamment à l'opéra d'État de Vienne, à Covent Garden, à la Scala et au Festival de Bayreuth. En 1981, des problèmes d'ouïe le forcent à prendre sa retraite. Il se consacre depuis lors à l'enseignement du chant. Parmi ses élèves, on compte la basse allemande . (fr)
