Hallam var ursprungligen jurist, men ägnade sig sedan han som nära knuten till whig-partiet erhållit en tjänst som commissioner of stamps åt historiskt författarskap. Hans främsta arbeten var View of the state of Europe during the middle ages (1818, svensk översättning i 2 band 1851–1852), The constitutional historiy of England (1827), Introduction to the literature of Europe in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries (4 band, 1837–1839). Hallams författningshistoriska arbeten, klara i framställningen och rika på material, är färgade av whigarnas politiska doktriner. Åren 1845–1849 var han president i Royal Society of Literature. (sv)

Hallam erhielt seine erste Vorbildung in Eton, studierte in Oxford und London, ließ sich in letzterer Stadt bleibend nieder, schloss sich den Whigs an und fand Zutritt zu den glänzendsten whiggistischen Kreisen damaliger Zeit. Als Geschichtsschreiber zeichnete sich Hallam durch gründliche Forschung und scharfe Auffassung sowie durch parteilose Darstellung und klassischen Stil aus. (de)
- Henry Hallam FRS FRSE FSA FRAS (9 July 1777 – 21 January 1859) was an English historian. Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, he practised as a barrister on the Oxford circuit for some years before turning to history. His major works were View of the State of Europe during the Middle Ages (1818), The Constitutional History of England (1827), and Introduction to the Literature of Europe, in the Fifteenth, Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries (1837). Although he took no part in politics himself, he was well acquainted with the band of authors and politicians who led the Whig party. In an 1828 review of Constitutional History, Robert Southey claimed that the work was biased in favour of the Whigs. (en)
