Hibernal is a variety of white wine grape of the hybrid with Vitis vinifera which was developed in 1944, by Heinrich Birk at the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute. The variety is a genetic crossbreed of the Seibel 7053 and Riesling clone 239 grape varieties. Hibernal has had plant variety protection since 1977 and was included on the list of varieties in 1999. The full-bodied and racy wine produced has a taste at times similar to a Scheurebe. The variety is particularly important in South East Europe.

| - Hibernal (zkratka Hi) je středně pozdní až pozdní, moštová odrůda révy (též hybridní odrůda, mezidruhové křížení, PiWi odrůda), určená k výrobě bílých vín, která byla vyšlechtěna roku 1944 v Německu, kříženec odrůd a Ryzlink rýnský. je interspecifická odrůda z dílny známého francouzského šlechtitele-hybridisty Alberta Seibela z počátku 19. století. Odrůda byla do roku 1950 vysazena ve Francii až na 40.000 hektarech vinic, ale po zákazu pěstování hybridních odrůd pro výrobu jakostních vín byly osazené plochy drasticky zredukovány. Odrůda je nyní populární na východním pobřeží USA, ve státech New York, Severní Karolína a Nová Anglie, kde jsou z ní vyráběna zajímavá, příjemná a pitelná rosé a též temně červená vína v úpravě barrique, která jsou typická poměrně značnou hořčinkou. Odrůda je častým partnerem při šlechtění nových odrůd, například a v Německu, a ve Francii. (cs)

Die Experimente mit dieser Rebsorte gehören in den gleichen Zusammenhang wie die Entwicklung anderer Neuzüchtungen wie Rondo oder Saphira. Die Grundidee war die Entwicklung von Reben mit Resistenz gegen den Echten- und Falschen Mehltau, um den Einsatz chemischer Pflanzenschutzmittel zu reduzieren. Die Sorte besitzt die Mehltauresistenzorte Ren3 und Ren9.Wie bei allen pilzwiderstandsfähigen Sorten sollte auch bei dieser Rebe die natürliche Widerstandsfähigkeit durch mind. 1–2 Behandlungen gegen Mehltau (Echter Mehltau und Falscher Mehltau der Weinrebe) unterstützt werden um einen Befall sicher zu verhindern. Diese sollten jeweils kurz vor und/oder kurz nach der Blüte erfolgen. Vorteilhaft ist eine sehr gute Winterfrostfestigkeit der Sorte, auch gegen Temperaturen deutlich unter −20 °C. Daher spielt die Sorte vor allem in Ländern Osteuropas, wie z. B. in Tschechien eine größere Rolle als in Deutschland.Der gehaltvolle und rassige Weintyp erinnert geschmacklich an Sauvignon Blanc und Scheurebe, da Hibernal, genauso wie diese Sorten, Geschmacksstoffe aus der Gruppe der Thiole enthält. Hibernal was developed for the same reasons as other new varieties developed by the Geisenheim Institute, such as Ehrenbreitsteiner, , Rondo and Saphira. The basic idea was to develop pest and fungus-resistant vines. In bad years Hibernal is susceptible to mildew (powdery mildew and downy mildew) and must be provided with 1-2 sulphur treatments shortly before and/or shortly after flowering. The variety, however, has a very good winter hardiness even against stronger frosts. The full-bodied and racy wine produced has a taste at times similar to a Scheurebe.
