For many years, the cause of the condition was thought to be an anxiety problem, caused by a mental health disorder. However, in recent years experts in the field of the disorder believe it to be caused by an overactive sympathetic nervous system, an automatic response which sufferers have no mental control over. It is related to focal hyperhidrosis, more commonly known as excessive sweating, as it is caused by the same overactive nerves which cause excessive sweating. Sufferers of severe facial blushing commonly experience focal hyperhidrosis. Studies have also shown that patients with severe facial blushing or focal hyperhidrosis commonly have family members with one or both of the related disorders. (en)

Wajah yang menjadi kemerahan adalah respons manusia terhadap atensi atau perhatian sosial. Meski setiap orang pernah mengalaminya, sebagian orang memiliki kecenderungan untuk tersipu kemerahan lebih sering. Wajah memerah dapat terjadi kapan saja dan dimana saja. Hal ini sering kali dipicu oleh peristiwa biasa, seperti berbicara dengan orang lain, menaiki kendaraan umum, menanyakan arah jalan, atau bahkan sekadar kontak mata dengan orang lain. Sampai saat ini, penyebab kondisi ini dianggap sebagai masalah kecemasan yang disebabkan oleh gangguan kesehatan mental. Namun, dalam beberapa tahun terakhir para ahli dibidang gangguan percaya bahwa hal ini disebabkan oleh sistem saraf simpatik yang terlalu aktif dan respons otomatis mental yang tidak bisa dikontrol oleh penderita.
