  • Irish syllabic poetry, also known in its later form as Dán díreach (1200-1600), is the name given to complex syllabic poetry in the Irish language as written by monastic poets from the eighth century on, and later by professional poets in Ireland and Gaelic Scotland. The monastic poets borrowed from both native and Latin traditions to create elaborate syllabic verse forms, and used them for religious and nature poetry. The concerns of the highly trained professional poets were mostly secular. They regarded themselves and were regarded by others as an integral part of the social and intellectual elite of medieval Ireland, a fact expressed through a subtle and cultivated poetic diction. The form and function of this poetry cannot be separated, therefore, from a particular social and cultural context. (en)
  • Thosaigh filíocht shiollach na Gaeilge (a dtugtaí Dán díreach (1200-1600) uirthi níos déanaí) i mainistreacha na hÉireann san 8ú haois. Le himeacht aimsire bhí feidhm á baint aisti ag filí gairmiúla in Éirinn agus in Albain. Bhain na manaigh úsáid as traidisiúin dhúchasacha agus Laidine chun meadarachtaí casta a cheapadh agus chumaidís filíocht faoin dúlra agus le hómós do Dhia. Ar chúrsaí tuata is mó a bhí aird na bhfilí oilte gairmiúla dírithe. Bhí meas acu orthu féin agus meas ag daoine eile orthu mar chuid de scothaicme inleachtúil an tsaoil úd, rud a chuiridís in iúl trí fhilíocht an-saothraithe. Ní féidir, mar sin, foirmeacha agus feidhmiú na filíochta sin a scaradh ó chúrsaí sóisialta agus cultúir. (ga)
