Sir John Bretland Farmer FRS FRSE (5 April 1865 – 26 January 1944) was a British botanist. He believed that chromomeres not chromosomes were the unit of heredity. Farmer and J. E. S. Moore introduced the term meiosis in 1905.

Farmer studierte an der Universität Oxford mit dem M.A. 1887. Zu seinen Lehrern gehörte Isaac Bayley Balfour. 1887 wurde er dort Demonstrator für Botanik. Außerdem war er von 1889 bis 1897 Fellow des Magdalen College in Oxford. Ab 1892 war er Assistant Professor und ab 1895 Professor für Botanik am Imperial College London (damals Royal College of Science). Das galt seit der Zeit von Thomas Henry Huxley als Vorreiter in der Einbeziehung von Laborkursen in den Biologieunterricht in Großbritannien. 1913 wurde er auch Direktor der biologischen Laboratorien. 1929 ging er in den Ruhestand. 1902 erhielt er einen D.Sc. in Oxford.
