Key Word In Context (KWIC) is the most common format for concordance lines. The term KWIC was first coined by Hans Peter Luhn. The system was based on a concept called keyword in titles which was first proposed for Manchester libraries in 1864 by Andrea Crestadoro. A KWIC index is formed by sorting and aligning the words within an article title to allow each word (except the stop words) in titles to be searchable alphabetically in the index. It was a useful indexing method for technical manuals before computerized full text search became common.

- Un Indice KWIC (acronimo di KeyWord In Context, "parola chiave nel contesto" in inglese) è un elenco ridondante di locuzioni che si utilizzano per costituire un indice di un corpo di conoscenze, cioè un elenco che agevoli l'accesso ai contenuti del suddetto corpo. Questi indici sono stati usati abbastanza ampiamente per redigere cataloghi di biblioteche; taluni indici analitici di libri si avvicinano agli indici KWIC. Il termine indice KWIC è stato introdotto quando si sono prodotti tali indici con il computer e in quest'ambito il nostro termine si contrappone a indice KWOC, dove KWOC sta per KeyWord Out of Context. - KWIC is de afkorting van Key Word In Context, een techniek die in 1958 door Hans Peter Luhn bij IBM ontwikkeld werd voor het automatisch genereren van indexen, in het bijzonder voor technisch-wetenschappelijke werken. Hierbij worden niet de titels alfabetisch gerangschikt, maar wel de "betekeniswoorden" (keywords) die erin voorkomen; en deze worden in hun context getoond, dat wil zeggen met een aantal omringende woorden. "Stopwoorden", zoals lidwoorden, voegwoorden of voorzetsels worden normaal niet beschouwd als "keyword", en niet meegenomen bij het opstellen van de index. (nl)

For example, a search query including all of the words in an example definition ("KWIC is an acronym for Key Word In Context, the most common format for concordance lines") and the Wikipedia slogan in English ("the free encyclopedia"), searched against a Wikipedia page, might yield a KWIC index as follows. A KWIC index usually uses a wide layout to allow the display of maximum 'in context' information (not shown in the following example). A KWIC index is a special case of a permuted index. This term refers to the fact that it indexes all cyclic permutations of the headings. Books composed of many short sections with their own descriptive headings, most notably collections of manual pages, often ended with a permuted index section, allowing the reader to easily find a section by any word from its heading. This practice, also known as Key Word Out of Context (KWOC), is no longer common.

- Un Indice KWIC (acronimo di KeyWord In Context, "parola chiave nel contesto" in inglese) è un elenco ridondante di locuzioni che si utilizzano per costituire un indice di un corpo di conoscenze, cioè un elenco che agevoli l'accesso ai contenuti del suddetto corpo. Questi indici sono stati usati abbastanza ampiamente per redigere cataloghi di biblioteche; taluni indici analitici di libri si avvicinano agli indici KWIC. Il termine indice KWIC è stato introdotto quando si sono prodotti tali indici con il computer e in quest'ambito il nostro termine si contrappone a indice KWOC, dove KWOC sta per KeyWord Out of Context. Consideriamo una locuzione utile per un indice, ad es. la locuzione Elenco di poligoni, poliedri e politopi. Accanto ad essa possono essere utili le varianti ottenute sottoponendola a limitatamente a quelle che cominciano con parole significative per chi utilizzerà l'indice. Nel caso preso ad esempio sono interessanti le permutazioni circolari poligoni, poliedri e politopi. * Elenco dipoliedri e politopi. * Elenco di poligoni,politopi. * Elenco di poligoni, poliedri e In effetti la locuzione esaminata viene utilizzata per denotare un documento che serve a descrivere una parte specifica di un corpo di conoscenze: nella fattispecie la locuzione è il titolo di una ipotetica pagina di Wikipedia che ha il compito di agevolare la visione di una parte del corpo di conoscenze concernente la disciplina 'matematica', corpo facente parte della nostra enciclopedia. Accade inoltre che le parole 'poligoni', 'poliedri' e 'politopi' sono chiaramente significative per molte delle persone che vorranno informarsi sulla matematica consultando Wikipedia. Non è invece significativa la permutazione di poligoni, poliedri e politopi. * Elenco in quanto la parola 'di' ha un ruolo funzionale generico in moltissime frasi della lingua italiana e non possiede connotazioni matematiche. Un indice KWIC potrebbe presentare in un ordine alfabetico tutte le permutazioni circolari inizianti con parole significative delle sue locuzioni. Si avrebbero quindi ridondanze: si potrebbe avere un indice 2 - 5 volte più esteso dell'elenco delle sole locuzioni. Un indice KWIC però presenta parole significative in evidenza e in ordine alfabetico e quindi risulta più efficacemente consultabile. Mentre nelle biblioteche dell'era preelettronica gli indici KWIC risultavano faticosi da costruire e ingombranti, nelle basi di conoscenza digitali si possono costruire indici KWIC in modo automatico o semiautomatico e l'estensione degli indici presenta costi trascurabili. La generazione mediante procedure di indici KWIC pone comunque vari problemi, in particolare quello dell'ambiguità delle parole componenti delle locuzioni e quello della valutazione del loro livello di significatività sulla base di previsioni sui possibili utenti dell'indice stesso.
