Vystudoval a archeologii na Karlově univerzitě. Jeho spolužačkou tam byla Alice Fučíková, která se stala později jeho manželkou i antropologickou partnerkou a spolupracovala s ním při mnoha terénních výzkumech v Africe. Od studií úzce spolupracoval s , se kterým také vydal několik publikací. (cs)
