The Gambia has multiparty political system but been a one party dominant state in most of the last 25 years with the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction in power until December 2016 when it lost to a coalition of 7 opposition parties that ushered in the third republic.

En 2005, cinq partis d’opposition, réunissant pratiquement toutes les forces d’opposition du pays, se sont coalisés sous la bannière de l’Alliance nationale pour la démocratie et le développement (ANDD). La situation a beaucoup évolué en 2016, avec la victoire d'Adama Barrow sur Jammeh lors de l'élection présidentielle. (fr)

Aus den Parlamentswahlen 2012 ging die Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction wiederum als stärkste Kraft im Parlament hervor. Oppositionelle Parteien sind erlaubt, erlangten aber in der Vergangenheit keinen großen Einfluss. Im Jahr 2005 bildeten fünf oppositionelle Parteien, also praktisch die gesamte Opposition des Landes, eine Koalition mit dem Namen National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD). Bei den verlor die bis dahin dominierende Partei nahezu alle Sitze, während die Partei des neugewählten amtierenden Präsidenten Barrow die absolute Mehrheit der Sitze erringen konnte. Für eine offizielle Anerkennung müssen sich Parteien bei der Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) registrieren lassen. Dafür sind unter anderem 10.000 Unterschriften von Wählerinnen und Wählern sowie eine Zahlung von einer Million Dalasi nötig. (de)
