Manbhum District was one of the districts of the East India during the British Raj. After India's independence, the district became a part of Bihar State. Upon re-organisation of the Indian states in the mid-1950s, present Purulia district was carved out of the district of Manbhum and became a part of the West Bengal; the remaining part of Manbhum district was kept with Bihar state and became part of Dhanbad district.

El límit nord el formava el riu Barakar, al nord i nord-est el Barakar i el Damodar; i el Subarnarekha en alguns punts al sud i oest. Les muntanyes principals eren Dalma (1.056 metres), Panchkot o Panchet (uns 500 metres) i Gangabari o Gajburu, a l'altiplà de Baghmundi a uns 30 km al dus-oest de Purulia. * Gobindpur Les ciutats principals eren Purulia, Jhalida i Raghunathpur. La llengua majoritaria era el bengalí (dialecte rarhi boli) però cap a l'oest predominava el bihari i hindi. Hi havia també 182.000 santals que parlaven la seva llengua pròpia. Els hinduistes eren el 87%, els animistes vers el 8% i els musulmans el 4%.
