Browning y prend pour prétexte la mort, en 1561, de la toute jeune duchesse de Ferrare, Lucrèce de Médicis, dont on soupçonne alors le mari, Alphonse II d'Este, de l'avoir empoisonnée, trois ans à peine après leur mariage. Ce dernier s'adresse à Nikolaus Madruz, l'envoyé du comte de Tyrol, et son monologue fait peu à peu apparaître, derrière l'urbanité du personnage, un homme « froid et égoïste, vindicatif et possessif au dernier degré ». Le lecteur se voit ainsi dresser un portrait correspondant trait pour trait à la description faite du personnage historique d'Alphonse II par Madruz, le messager de Ferdinand de Tyrol. (fr)
