The Natal Indian Congress (NIC) was an organisation that aimed to fight discrimination against Indians in South Africa. The Natal Indian Congress was proposed by Mahatma Gandhi on 22 May 1894. established on 22 August 1894. Gandhi was the Honorary Secretary and Abdoola Hajee Adam Jhaveri (Dada Abdulla) was elected president. During its formative years, the NIC introduced many for changes to proposed discriminatory legislations. In the 1960s, the organisation become inactive due to the growing state repression and the ban of its leaders. It later allied itself with the African National Congress.

  • Der Natal Indian Congress (benannt nach der Kolonie Natal in Anlehnung an den Indischen Nationalkongress; kurz NIC) war eine Interessenvertretung der zugewanderten Inder im Südafrika des späten 19. Jahrhunderts und wurde anfangs von Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi als Generalsekretär geleitet. 1894 organisierte Gandhi erstmals mit Hilfe des von ihm gegründeten Natal Indian Congress einen Widerstand der indischen Einwanderer gegen diskriminierende Gesetze wie die Aberkennung des Stimmrechtes. 1919 wurde der NIC Teil des South African Indian Congress (SAIC), blieb aber als Unterorganisation bis zum Ende der Apartheid bestehen.
