The National Library of Uganda was established by an Act of Parliament in 2003, replacing the Public Libraries Board itself established in 1964. The Act provides for the depositing and preservation of publications, the setting up of an information referral service and library co-ordination and to provide for other related matters. The Act was passed in Parliament in September 2002 after the Committee on Social Services had incorporated the concerns of other stakeholders, the President accented to it in December 2002 and it was published in the Uganda gazette as Act No.2 of 2003
