Nieuw Sloten is a neighborhood of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Nieuw Sloten was created in the 1990s because the Netherlands failed to become the host of the 1992 Summer Olympics, losing to Barcelona, an agreement was made with local farmers and construction would then begin, Nieuw Sloten would almost overwhelm the older counterpart Sloten, but thanks to local disagreement and defence of the village by the locals, the village was kept untouched along with a small part of the former polders in which the buildings of Nieuw-West currently stand on today.

In 1996 werd aan het ontwerp de Omgevingsarchitectuurprijs van de Bond van Nederlandse Architecten toegekend. - Nieuw Sloten è un quartiere di Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Il nome Nieuw Sloten deriva dal vicino villaggio di Sloten. Tra il 1960 e il 1988 qui si trovava l'area orticola di Sloten, che fu assegnata gli orticoltori che dovettero far posto alla costruzione del distretto di Overtoomse Veld. Negli anni '80, l'intenzione era quella di costruire qui il villaggio olimpico per i Giochi Olimpici del 1992, per i quali Amsterdam aveva fatto domanda nel 1984. In preparazione di questo, erano già in corso trattative con gli orticoltori per l'acquisizione dei terreni a partire dal 1985. Nel 1986, però, questi Giochi Olimpici non furono assegnati ad Amsterdam ma a Barcellona. Tuttavia, questo periodo "olimpico" ha accelerato lo sviluppo dell'area residenziale di Sloten. Nieuw Sloten è stata costruita in modo più compatto rispetto alle vicine Western Garden Cities, che erano state costruite circa trent'anni prima. Nel 1991 sono state consegnate le prime abitazioni. Il quartiere è costituito da un misto di edifici bassi, medi e alti ed è stato completato a metà degli anni '90. Le strade del quartiere prendono il nome da città e paesi del Belgio. Il fulcro del quartiere è il Kasterlee Park ed il vicino centro commerciale all'aperto di Belgiëplein. Nel 1996 il progetto è stato insignito del Premio di Architettura Ambientale dell'Associazione degli Architetti Olandesi. Nel 1991 la linea 2 del tram, che fino ad allora terminava vicino all'ospedale Slotervaart, appena ad est di Nieuw Sloten, è stata prolungata fino a un nuovo capolinea a Oudenaardeplantsoen. Inoltre, le linee di autobus 369 e 195 garantiscono il collegamento con il quartiere. Con l'istituzione degli Stadsdeel, Nieuw Sloten è entrato a far parte di Slotervaart/Overtoomse Veld nel 1990, dal 2004 il nome è stato abbreviato in Slotervaart. - Nieuw Sloten is een wijk in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. De naam Nieuw Sloten is ontleend aan het nabijgelegen dorp Sloten. Tussen 1960 en 1988 lag hier het Tuinbouwgebied Sloten, dat de vervanging was voor de tuinders die moesten wijken voor de bouw van de wijk Overtoomse Veld. In de jaren tachtig was het de bedoeling hier het Olympisch dorp te bouwen voor de Olympische Spelen van 1992, waar Amsterdam zich in 1984 kandidaat voor had gesteld. Ter voorbereiding daarop werd al vanaf 1985 met de tuinders onderhandeld over de overname. In 1986 werden deze Olympische Spelen echter niet aan Amsterdam maar aan Barcelona toegewezen. Door deze 'Olympische' periode is de ontwikkeling van het woningbouwgebied Sloten echter in een versnelling geraakt. In Nieuw Sloten is veel compacter gebouwd dan in de omliggende Westelijke Tuinsteden, die zo’n dertig jaar eerder waren gebouwd. In 1991 konden de eerste woningen in gebruik genomen worden. De wijk bestaat uit een mengeling van laag-, middel- en hoogbouw en is halverwege de jaren negentig voltooid. In Nieuw Sloten zijn de straten vernoemd naar steden en dorpen in België. In de wijk bevindt zich het Kasterleepark. Het winkelcentrum in Nieuw Sloten bevindt zich aan het centraal gelegen Belgiëplein naast het Kasterleepark. In 1996 werd aan het ontwerp de Omgevingsarchitectuurprijs van de Bond van Nederlandse Architecten toegekend. Nieuw Sloten wordt begrensd door de Plesmanlaan, het Christoffel Plantijnpad, de Sloterweg en de Vrije Geer. In 1991 werd tramlijn 2, die tot dan eindigde aan de Louwesweg bij het Slotervaartziekenhuis net ten oosten van Nieuw Sloten, over de Antwerpenbaan in de toen in aanbouw zijnde wijk verlengd naar een nieuw eindpunt aan het Oudenaardeplantsoen. Voorts verzorgen de buslijnen 369 en 195 de verbinding met de wijk. Met de instelling van de stadsdelen werd de in aanbouw zijnde wijk in 1990 onderdeel van Slotervaart/Overtoomse Veld, sinds 2004 is de naam verkort tot Slotervaart. Sinds 1 mei 2010 maakt Nieuw Sloten deel uit van stadsdeel Nieuw-West. (nl)
