Parentification or parent–child role reversal is the process of role reversal whereby a child or adolescent is obliged to act as parent to their own parent or sibling. Two distinct types of parentification have been identified technically: instrumental parentification and emotional parentification. Instrumental parentification involves the child completing physical tasks for the family, such as looking after a sick relative, paying bills, or providing assistance to younger siblings that would normally be provided by a parent. Emotional parentification occurs when a child or adolescent must take on the role of a confidante or mediator for (or between) parents or family members.

Het kind krijgt reeds op jonge leeftijd de rol van adviseur, trooster of bemiddelaar, terwijl het daar te jong voor is. Parentificatie is destructief. Als het kind een rol krijgt die bij zijn of haar leeftijd past en daar erkenning voor krijgt, is de situatie niet destructief. Eine Parentifizierung in diesem Sinne findet statt, wenn sich das Kind aufgefordert und/oder verpflichtet fühlt, seinerseits die nicht-kindgerechte, überfordernde und seine weitere Entwicklung blockierende „Eltern-Funktion“ gegenüber einem oder beiden Elternteil(en) wahrzunehmen. Melitta Schmideberg negli anni 1940 aveva notato come la deprivazione emotiva potesse portare i genitori a trattare inconsapevolmente i propri figli come figure genitoriali sostitutive. Salvador Minuchin ha parlato di "sposificazione" per designare lo stesso fenomeno. In queste relazioni i confini personali sono confusi. Eric Berne ha trattato le relazioni "simmetriche" fra genitori e figli, che si verificano quando uno dei figli (di solito il maggiore) sostituisce un genitore assente. Virginia Satir ha parlato della "discrepanza ruolo-funzione" in cui il figlio assume il ruolo del capofamiglia, ruolo tradizionalmente attribuito al padre.
