Thompson fue el mayor de cuatro hermanos. Sus padres son Tom y Dot Thompson; tiene dos hermanos (Andrew y Robert) y una hermana, Carol, exmujer de Simon Gallup, compañero de Porl en sus años en The Cure. Thompson war 1977 bis 1979 und von 1984 bis 1992 Mitglied der britischen Alternative-Band The Cure. Außerdem war er mit seiner Firma Parched Art für die Gestaltung einiger Cure-Cover zuständig und trug mit seinem unnachahmlichen Stil nicht unerheblich zum Image der Band bei.
