Purwoto Gandasubrata was the eighth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Indonesia. Alongside the Ministry of Justice officials in the Sixth Development Cabinet, Gandasubrata was a part of a general return of civilian officials to the judiciary of Indonesia in the early 1990s after a period of former military officials dominating the branch from the late 1970s. Gandasubrata had initially served as the chief of the district court of Semarang, as well as the chairman of the regional branch of the Indonesian Judges Association.

- Purwoto Suhadi Gandasubrata, S.H. (11 Oktober 1929 – 4 Mei 2005) adalah Ketua Mahkamah Agung (MA) Indonesia pada tahun 1992-1994. Purwoto lulus dari Fakultas Hukum Universitas Indonesia pada tahun 1956. Lulus dari UI, dia langsung mengawali karier sebagai hakim di Pengadilan Negeri (PN) Magelang, Jawa Tengah dan bertahan di sana selama dua tahun. Selanjutnya dia pernah bertugas di sejumlah pengadilan negeri di Tanah Air, di antaranya di PN Purwokerto (1958-1964) dan PN Semarang (1965-1966). Purwoto meninggalkan seorang istri, Siti Djumalia dan enam anak. (in)

| - Purwoto Gandasubrata was the eighth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Indonesia. Alongside the Ministry of Justice officials in the Sixth Development Cabinet, Gandasubrata was a part of a general return of civilian officials to the judiciary of Indonesia in the early 1990s after a period of former military officials dominating the branch from the late 1970s. Gandasubrata had initially served as the chief of the district court of Semarang, as well as the chairman of the regional branch of the Indonesian Judges Association. Gandasubrata was the first Chief Justice appointed from the professional judiciary since Umar Seno Aji. During his two years in the position, much of his efforts were spent on attempts to increase the autonomy, power, and status of the judicial branch of government. On the occasion of his retirement in 1994, Gandasubrata announced a 100% salary increase for Indonesian judges in a move that was seen as a parting gift. The increase was later offset by a 45% reduction in benefits enacted by the government. (en)

Pada tahun 1981, anggota World Association of Judges ini diangkat menjadi Wakil Ketua MA. Pada 12 Agustus 1992, dia dilantik menjadi Ketua MA. Purwoto pernah memimpin majelis khusus Peninjauan Kembali yang membatalkan putusan kasasi kasus pada Oktober 1994. Kasus Kedung Ombo melibatkan warga yang menolak dievakuasi untuk pembangunan waduk. Akibatnya, 34 keluarga warga Kedung Ombo yang oleh majelis kasasi Mahkamah Agung pimpinan Prof. Zaenal Asikin Kusumah Atmadja telah diputuskan berhak mendapat ganti rugi yang layak, harus kecewa. Purwoto meninggalkan seorang istri, Siti Djumalia dan enam anak. (in)
