Born in Lynchburg, Virginia to McCoy and Julia Gibson, Gibson was educated in the public schools of Washington, D.C., and served in the U.S. Army in the aftermath of World War II, from 1946 to 1947. He then received a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Union University in 1953, also attending the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1952 and 1953, and received an Bachelor of Laws from Howard University School of Law in 1956.
