Sir Richard Henry Friend FRS HonFInstP FREng (born 18 January 1953) is a British physicist who was the Cavendish Professor of Physics at the University of Cambridge from 1995 until 2020 and is Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professor at the National University of Singapore. Friend's research concerns the physics and engineering of carbon-based semiconductors. He also serves as Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Singapore.

Danach war er Forschungsstudent am Cavendish Laboratory. 1977 wurde er Fellow des St. John’s College und 1978 wurde er promoviert. Als Post-Doktorand war er 1977/78 Wissenschaftler des CNRS an der Universität Paris-Süd. 1980 wurde er University Demonstrator, 1985 Lecturer und 1993 Reader an der Universität Cambridge. Seit 1995 ist er dort Cavendish Professor of Physics und seit 2004 Vorsitzender der Physik-Fakultät. 1986/87 war er Gastprofessor an der University of California, Santa Barbara und seit 2006 ist er auch Professor an der National University of Singapore. Il s'est consacré au développement des transistors à effet de champ à substrat polymère, aux LEDs, aux diodes photovoltaïques, au pompage optique et à l'impression 3D de transistors à base de polymère. Il est à l'origine des premiers travaux sur les propriétés électroniques des semi-conducteurs moléculaires. Il est membre d'un groupe de recherche interdisciplinaire de Cambridge voué à la promotion des nanotechnologies.
