The church of Sant'Egidio is located in the historic center of Mantua on Via Pietro Frattini. A church was located on the site likely by the 9th century, but is documented from the year 1151 in a bull by Pope Eugenius III . In 1540, the chapel of the Valenti was built, commissioned by the last will of Valente Valenti, courtier in the Gonzaga Duchy. Beginning in 1721, the church underwent a major reconstruction, and the present facade dates to that time. In 1777, the cardinal reconstructed the family chapel. The interior, mainly the semicircular apse, contains the following canvases:

Nel Settecento fu necessaria una profonda ristrutturazione a causa della vetustà della chiesa; la prima pietra fu posata il 19 giugno 1721. Importante intervento fu voluto nel 1777 dal cardinale Luigi Valenti che fece ricostruire la cappella di famiglia.La ristrutturazione della chiesa si poté ritenere conclusa nel 1787 con la sistemazione del coro. Al centro del pavimento della navata un'epigrafe ricorda che vi era sepolto Bernardo Tasso, padre del poeta Torquato Tasso; egli morì ad Ostiglia nel 1569 e vi fu sepolto, finche' i suoi resti furono successivamente traslati nella Chiesa di San Paolo di Ferrara.
