Sari Hanafi is currently a professor of sociology at the American University of Beirut and chair of the Islamic Studies program. He is the president of the International Sociological Association and also the editor of Idafat: the Arab Journal of Sociology (Arabic). In 2018, Hanafi founded "Athar", the Portal for Social impact of scientific research in/on the Arab world.

Il obtient ensuite le DEA Sciences et techniques dans l'histoire, la culture et l'organisation des sociétés de l'université de Strasbourg pour sa thèse intitulée La formation des ingénieurs en Syrie et son adaptation aux besoins de la société. Il obtient ensuite un doctorat, avec une mention Très honorable, en sociologie de l'École des hautes études en sciences sociales de Paris pour sa thèse Les ingénieurs en Syrie. Modernisation, technobureaucratie et identité. Il a travaillé pour le CNRS de 1991 à 1994. (fr)

Nach einer Ausbildung zum Bauingenieur (Bachelor 1984 an der Universität Damaskus) war Hanafi bis Ende 1987 in diesem Beruf tätig, studierte aber gleichzeitig an der Universität Damaskus Soziologie (Bachelor 1987). 1989 machte er im Fach Soziologie das Master-Examen an der Universität Straßburg und 1994 wurde er an der École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris promoviert. Thema seiner Master-Thesis und seiner Dissertationsschrift ist die gesellschaftliche Bedeutung von Ingenieuren in Syrien. (de)
