Semi-Bantu or Semibantu is an outdated term used for specific inhabitants of the Western grassfields of Cameroon (portions of the Adamawa, West, Northwest, and Southwest regions), who speak languages that have certain characteristics to the Bantu language family, but they're excluded from them. The people themselves are considered ethnically divergent from other Bantu peoples of central and southern Africa.

* Schleicher (1891) prägte den Begriff Semi-Bantu für die afrikanischen Sprachen, in denen das System der Nominalklassen entstanden und deswegen noch unvollkommen entwickelt sein soll. Eine genetische Beziehung zu den Bantusprachen ist trotz des Namens nicht impliziert.
* Johnston (1919) verwendete Semi-Bantu zur Bezeichnung der afrikanischen Sprachen, die Spuren eines Nominalklassensystems besitzen. Dabei kann – nach Johnston – die Reduktion des Klassensystems (im Vergleich zu den Bantusprachen, die ein voll entwickeltes Klassensystem besitzen) auf Verlust während der Sprachentwicklung oder aber durch Mischung mit anderen Nicht-Klassen-Sprachen zurückzuführen sein. Die Begriffe Semi-Bantu oder Semi-Bantu-Sprachen sind heute veraltet. When these ethnic groups migrated into northern Cameroon, their languages were influenced by the languages of both Bantu-speaking ethnic groups in the forests to the south and of the Benue-Congo-speaking peoples of the savannas to the north.
