CBM Star of Hope Hospital was founded by Canadian Baptist Mission in 1898 due to initiative of pioneer medical missionaries. Church historian, William Gordon Carder, formerly Professor of Church History at Andhra Christian Theological College, Hyderabad, in Hand to the Indian Plow published in 1976 wrote, Dr. Pearl Smith-Chute, a graduate of University of Toronto, moved to Akiveedu. Seeing lack of medical services and great need of people, she began medical work at mission bungalow in 1896. Then within two years (1898), with Rs.700.00 collected locally, a small hospital building of two rooms was built and named "The Star of Hope".
