Ambientato in Belgio nel periodo a cavallo dell'occupazione nazista, racconta il percorso di crescita del giovane Louis, un adolescente fiammingo che ondeggia tra una realtà non troppo soddisfacente e fantasie decisamente ingombranti, che troveranno infine una realizzazione nella scrittura. Il romanzo vinse in Italia il premio Nonino nel 2000. (it)
- Het verdriet van België is een roman van de Belgische auteur Hugo Claus, voor het eerst verschenen in 1983 bij uitgeverij De Bezige Bij. Het werk wordt algemeen als zijn magnum opus beschouwd. De roman schildert een niet erg vleiend portret van een Vlaamse collaborerende familie in de jaren voor, tijdens en na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, maar het is ook een bildungsroman over een eigenzinnige adolescent die besluit om schrijver te worden.
