Theater an der Ruhr is a theatre in Mulheim, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was founded in 1980 by the Italian director Roberto Ciulli and the script editor Helmut Schäfer as gGmbH in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The city of Mülheim also became a companion gGmbH. The theatre is subsidised with a budget of 3.6 million euros yearly to 50% and is financed to 50% by the income of the theatre. His draught means an artistic and economic alternative to the customary model of municipal stages.

Seit 2019 besteht die künstlerische Leitung des Theater an der Ruhr aus dem Regisseur Philipp Preuss sowie den Dramaturgen Helmut Schäfer und Sven Schlötcke, der zudem Geschäftsführer ist. Spielorte sind seit 1981 die Mülheimer Stadthalle und das Theater an der Ruhr im Raffelbergpark, das in den 90er Jahren mit Mitteln des Landes Nordrhein – Westfalen saniert und zu einem vollwertigen Theater umgebaut wurde.
