| - In biology, a tunica (/ˈt(j)uːnɪkə/, UK: /ˈtʃuːnɪkə/; pl. tunicae) is a layer, coat, sheath, or similar covering. The word came to English from the New Latin of science and medicine. Its literal sense is about the same as that of the word tunic, with which it is cognate. In biology one of its senses used to be the taxonomic name of a genus of plants, but the nomenclature has been revised and those plants are now included in the genus Petrorhagia. In modern biology in general, tunica occurs as a technical or anatomical term mainly in botany and zoology. It usually refers to membranous structures that line or cover particular organs. In many such contexts tunica is used interchangeably with tunic according to preference. An organ or organism that has a tunic(a) may be said to be tunicate, as in a tunicate bulb. This adjective tunicate is not to be confused with the noun tunicate, which refers to a member of the subphylum Tunicata. (en)
- Il termine tunica in botanica indica una sottile membrana, o strato di fibre, di consistenza papiracea, talvolta di colorazione bruno-rossiccio, ma il più delle volte biancastro o incolore, avente funzione protettiva ed isolante, che riveste alcuni organi vegetali. È un tessuto tegumentale primario esterno, derivante dal meristema primario del fusto, che riveste la parte aerea del corpo primario della pianta, ed è solitamente monostratificata. Inoltre, la tunica, è caratterizzata dall'assenza di cloroplasti e dalla presenza di annessi come gli stomi e i peli. Oltre ad avere una funzione protettiva e isolante generale, la tunica evita perdite d'acqua, protegge da fattori abiotici come i raggi UV, e fattori biotici, come ad esempio l'ingresso di patogeni batterici e fungini. Le tuniche, sono assai evidenti nei bulbi, o bulbo tuberi, di alcune specie vegetali, in particolar modo del genere Allium e Romulea. Nel comune aglio da cucina, è la membrana sottile che riveste lo spicchio, che eliminato permette l'utilizzo del bulbo (comunemente noto come testa), come vario. (it)
