Dalam perkembangannya, pada tahun 1985 jumlah mereka berada di kisaran 44.048 jiwa, tetapi jumlah mereka tidak lagi diketahui secara pasti. Kini, masyarakat Pulau Buru pada umumnya telah banyak berubah dan orang Wai Apu sendiri diperkirakan telah mengalami perubahan. (in)
