D'un point de vue scientifique, on parle de gravitropisme négatif. En effet, les branches souples se dirigent vers le bas, alors que les tiges et les branches de la plupart des végétaux poussent vers le haut à la recherche de davantage de lumière. Von dieser kurzen Hauptachse gehen viele Seitenzweige mit verstärktem Längen-, aber geringem Dickenwachstum aus. Die langen Seitenzweige hängen schleppenartig herab. Solche Trauer- oder Pendulaformen überdauern normalerweise im Unterstand der Wälder. Die an den schirmartig überhängenden Zweigen positionierten Blätter können die durch den Oberbestand durchtretende Streustrahlung besser nutzen. Ändert sich der Lichteinfall, weil beispielsweise der Oberbestand nach Windbruch sich verringert, entwickeln solche Trauerformen normalerweise aus ruhenden Knospen einen steil aufrecht wachsenden Trieb, der aber häufig nach einem entsprechenden Längenwachstum erneut überhängt. Solche natürlich auftretenden Formen sind durch züchterische Eingriffe verstärkt worden und finden sich gelegentlich als Solitärbäume in Parks und Grünanlagen. (de)

Ils dépassent rarement 10 mètres à quelques exceptions près telles que le hêtre pleureur (Fagus sylvatica f. pendula). En raison de cette forme, ils sont appréciés comme arbre d'ornement. Pour être mis en valeur, ils doivent être plantés isolés ou entourés de plantes plus basses. Il y a environ 500 cultivars pleureurs dans 75 genres différents .
