Convintissimo puritano, scrisse (1632) un libello polemico nel quale attaccava il teatro e gli attori e forse, in secondo piano, la monarchia. Messo alla berlina (gli furono amputate le orecchie) e segregato nella Torre di Londra, non smise mai di scrivere. Liberato (1640) si inimicò William Laud, ma fu parlamentare di Newport. Fervido oppositore di Oliver Cromwell, fu cacciato dal parlamento e arrestato (1650) per poi essere reintegrato e nominato Archivista di Londra. (it)
