I racconti, scritti tra la fine del 1915 e l'inizio del 1916, apparvero in alcune riviste minori prima di venire raccolti in un unico libro. Le storie hanno come filo conduttore il personaggio di George Willard, giovane giornalista che si interessa delle vite solitarie degli abitanti del fittizio villaggio di Winesburg in Ohio sul finire del XIX secolo. Opowiadania te tworzą spójny obraz małomiasteczkowej społeczności, dlatego niektórzy krytycy uważają ten utwór, podobnie jak Dublińczyków Jamesa Joyce’a, za specyficzną powieść nowelową. Głównym bohaterem jest George Willard. Inne postacie to między innymi Wing Biddlebaum, Doctor Reefy, Elizabeth Willard, Doctor Parcival, Louise Trunnion, Jesse Bentley, Louise Bentley, David Hardy, Joe Welling, Alice Hindman, Wash Williams i Seth Richmond.
