Women in the Israel Defense Forces have had a significant presence on the country's political scene since its independence in 1948. Israel is one of only a few countries in the world to have a mandatory military service requirement for women, though female conscription is limited to those who are ethnic Jews. In 2014, the IDF stated that fewer than 4 percent of women are in combat positions such as light infantry and helicopter or fighter pilots, and that they are instead concentrated in "combat-support" positions.
