Maria Sharapova defeated Sara Errani in the final, 6–3, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2012 French Open. It was her first French Open title, and she completed the career Grand Slam with the win. It was Sharapova's first major title since the 2008 Australian Open, and her first since a shoulder surgery that threatened to end her career four years prior. She only lost one set during the tournament, to Klára Zakopalová in the fourth round. This marked the major main-draw debut of future World No. 1 Karolína Plíšková, and future semi-finalist and World No. 4 Kiki Bertens
