The premier event was the 102nd Indianapolis 500, with Takuma Sato entering as the defending Indianapolis 500 winner. Josef Newgarden entered the season as the defending National Champion. The season marked the debut of a new universal aerokit, replacing the manufacturer-designed kits used from 2015 to 2017.
