Anti-Semitism in contemporary Hungary remains a controversial topic. Modern anti-Semitism has its roots in historical cultural beliefs and activities. Communist rule in the 1900s resulted in wide-spread anti-Semitic feelings, and Hungarian Jews experienced deportations during the second world war. While anti-Semitism in Hungary manifested itself in a variety of ways, it became stronger after the country moved towards democracy in 1989. Surveys performed from 2009 and beyond have consistently found high levels of anti-Semitic feelings amongst the general population.
