Envoy to the Ottoman Empire and a Confederate military officer. He helped pass influential legislation including the Terrell Election Law, served as president of the Texas State Historical Association and on the board of regents for the University of Texas. Alexander Watkins Terrell (* 3. November 1827 im Patrick County, Virginia; † 9. Von 1893 bis 1897 war er Gesandter der Vereinigten Staaten im Osmanischen Reich. Terrell gehörte dem Senat von Texas von 1876 bis 1884 an und wurde mehrmals ins Repräsentantenhaus von Texas gewählt – 1890 bis 1892, dann erneut 1902 bis 1906. Er war überzeugter Befürworter der im Jahre 1902 in Texas eingeführten „poll tax“ (Kopfsteuer). Er war Hauptinitiator der 1903/1905 verabschiedeten so genannten „Terrell’s Election Laws“ („Terrells Wahl-Gesetze“), die regulierend in die Primary-Wahlen eingriffen und großen Teile der Unterschichten – insbesondere Afroamerikaner – von der Teilnahme an Wahlen ausschloss.
