Strictly speaking it was not a valve gear but a variable expansion mechanism adapted to the Walschaerts layout replacing the expansion link and sliding die block. The Baker arrangement used more pivot bearings or pin joints, but avoided the die slip inherent to the expansion link, with the aim of lessening wear and the need for service; it could also facilitate longer valve travel. Die Baker-Steuerung, engl. Baker valve gear, ist eine Dampfmaschinensteuerung, die nach der A.D. Baker Company in Swanton (Ohio), einem Hersteller von Lokomobilen, benannt ist. Der Entwurf kam von einem Mitarbeiter namens Gifford, wurde aber von dem Unternehmen in eigenem Namen im Jahr 1903 patentiert. Die Steuerung setzte sich in den Vereinigten Staaten durch und ist bei dort hergestellten Lokomotiven weit verbreitet.
