Il milite d'abord dans les rangs de l'Action française et soutient par la suite le Front national. C'est une figure du traditionalisme catholique. Il fait également usage du nom de plume Jean-Louis Lagor, en début de carrière, ainsi que celui de Jean-Baptiste Castetis (Lagor, Madiran et Castétis sont des communes des Pyrénées-Atlantiques).
