It originated from the deglaciation of glacier Yanarahu in 1968. It was renamed in honor of former President Fernando Belaunde Terry who supported the construction of the AN-107 Route, which runs along its banks south and east. It is the smallest of the group of three lagoons that are located in the basin of river . It's one of the most accessible areas of the province. La laguna Belaúnde (en quechua: Sulla Qucha), es un depósito natural de agua dulce situada en el distrito ancashino de Chacas, en la zona central de la Cordillera Blanca, a 4500 msnm. Se originó por la desglaciación del nevado Contrahierbas en 1968. Fue rebautizada en honor al expresidente Fernando Belaúnde Terry quien apoyó en la construcción de la carretera Carhuaz-Chacas entre 1979 y 1982, la cual recorre por su orilla sureste.
