Homographs are words with the same spelling but having more than one meaning Homographs may be pronounced the same (homophones), or they may be pronounced differently (heteronyms, also known as heterophones). Some homographs are nouns or adjectives when the accent is on the first syllable, and verbs when it is on the second. When the prefix "re-" is added to a monosyllabic word, the word gains currency both as a noun and as a verb. Most of the pairs listed below are closely related: for example, "absent" as a noun meaning "missing", and as a verb meaning "to make oneself missing". There are also many cases in which homographs are of an entirely separate origin, or whose meanings have diverged to the point that present-day speakers have little historical understanding: for example, "bat". Many, though not all of these, have first syllables that evolved from Latin. Also, some words only exhibit in certain dialects of English. For a list of homographs with different pronunciations (heteronyms) see Heteronym (linguistics). 1. * absent 2. * accent 3. * action 4. * adder 5. * address 6. * advocate 7. * agape 8. * alternate 9. * analyses 10. * appropriate 11. * ash 12. * back 13. * balance 14. * ball 15. * balls 16. * bank 17. * bar 18. * bark 19. * bass 20. * bat 21. * battery 22. * bay 23. * bear 24. * bimonthly 25. * bow 26. * brace 27. * brilliant 28. * buck 29. * buffet 30. * building 31. * can 32. * capital 33. * carp 34. * certain 35. * character 36. * chest 37. * cleave 38. * clip 39. * close 40. * club 41. * combat 42. * combine 43. * commune 44. * console 45. * contact 46. * content 47. * contest 48. * contract 49. * converse 50. * convert 51. * cool 52. * crane 53. * dab 54. * damper 55. * date 56. * dear 57. * decrease 58. * default 59. * degree 60. * deliberate 61. * desert 62. * die 63. * discharge 64. * discount 65. * dismiss 66. * dismount 67. * display 68. * Djibouti 69. * does 70. * doing 71. * dove 72. * down 73. * drain 74. * drawer 75. * dub 76. * duck 77. * duplicate 78. * effect 79. * elaborate 80. * engage 81. * entrance 82. * even 83. * evening 84. * excuse 85. * exploit 86. * extract 87. * fall 88. * fan 89. * fairly 90. * file 91. * finance 92. * fine 93. * firm 94. * float 95. * flush 96. * fly * float 97. * foot 98. * football field 99. * funny 100. * gas 101. * gay 102. * Georgia 103. * go 104. * gorge 105. * grave 106. * gyro 107. * harbor 108. * hard 109. * hew 110. * hive 111. * hoe 112. * impact 113. * implant 114. * import 115. * impound 116. * incline 117. * inclined 118. * increase 119. * insert 120. * insult 121. * intercept 122. * interchange 123. * intestine 124. * intimate 125. * into 126. * intrigue 127. * invalid 128. * invite 129. * jam 130. * just 131. * kind 132. * land 133. * lead 134. * learned 135. * leave 136. * leaves 137. * Lebanon 138. * left 139. * letter 140. * lie 141. * light 142. * lighter 143. * lit 144. * live 145. * lose 146. * lumber 147. * Luxembourg 148. * manifest 149. * mark 150. * mass 151. * match 152. * may 153. * mean 154. * median 155. * mind 156. * mint 157. * minute 158. * mode 159. * model 160. * mole 161. * moped 162. * mortar 163. * mouse 164. * murder 165. * nail 166. * notice 167. * novel 168. * number 169. * nut 170. * obituary 171. * object 172. * objective 173. * obtuse 174. * odd 175. * offense 176. * one 177. * ought 178. * overcount 179. * overlay 180. * overlook 181. * palm 182. * park 183. * patient 184. * pen 185. * pencil 186. * perfect 187. * perfume 188. * permit 189. * pervert 190. * pitch 191. * pin 192. * plain 193. * plaster 194. * play 195. * polish 196. * pop 197. * portmanteau 198. * possess 199. * pound 200. * predate 201. * present 202. * pretty 203. * proceeds 204. * progress 205. * project 206. * protest 207. * purpose 208. * putting 209. * quail 210. * quarry 211. * quarter 212. * racket 213. * read 214. * rebel 215. * recall 216. * recap 217. * recess 218. * record 219. * redress 220. * refund 221. * refuse 222. * regress 223. * reject 224. * relapse 225. * remake 226. * research 227. * resent 228. * reservation 229. * resume 230. * retake 231. * retard 232. * retract 233. * revolt 234. * right 235. * ring 236. * rock 237. * roll 238. * rose 239. * round 240. * row 241. * ruler 242. * San Marino 243. * saw 244. * scale 245. * scared 246. * school 247. * seal 248. * second 249. * sewer 250. * sheer 251. * short 252. * shorts 253. * show 254. * shower 255. * sign 256. * sink 257. * skied 258. * sow 259. * spirit 260. * spoke 261. * spring 262. * stone 263. * story 264. * straight 265. * subject 266. * survey 267. * suspect 268. * tear 269. * theory 270. * they 271. * tie 272. * toll 273. * too 274. * top 275. * train 276. * transfer 277. * transform 278. * transplant 279. * transport 280. * transpose 281. * type 282. * undercount 283. * update 284. * uplift 285. * upset 286. * venery 287. * virus 288. * Washington 289. * watch 290. * wave 291. * widget 292. * wind 293. * window 294. * wound 295. * yard 296. * you
