Ide mendirikan Mathematikum berawal pada tahun 1994 saat mengadakan pameran alat peraga matematika karya anak didiknya di Universitas Justus Liebig Giessen. Pameran yang dilakukan Albrecht Beutelspacher bersama mahasiswa ini dilakukan setiap tahun dan semakin menarik banyak pengunjung yang datang. Mulai tahun 1998 Albrecht melakukan tur pameran di beberapa kota di Jerman dan di luar negeri. Pada tanggal Mathematikum diresmikan sebagai galeri pameran sekaligus museum matematika.

Mathematikum adalah museum bertemakan ilmu matematika yang terletak di kota Gießen, Jerman. Ide mendirikan Mathematikum berawal pada tahun 1994 saat mengadakan pameran alat peraga matematika karya anak didiknya di Universitas Justus Liebig Giessen. Pameran yang dilakukan Albrecht Beutelspacher bersama mahasiswa ini dilakukan setiap tahun dan semakin menarik banyak pengunjung yang datang. Mulai tahun 1998 Albrecht melakukan tur pameran di beberapa kota di Jerman dan di luar negeri. Pada tanggal Mathematikum diresmikan sebagai galeri pameran sekaligus museum matematika. Museum Mathematikum memiliki tiga lantai dengan total luas bangunan 1200 m². Mathematikum rata-rata didatangi 150.000 pengunjung setiap tahunnya. Tujuan didirikannya museum mathematikum ini adalah untuk mengajak semua kalangan belajar matematika secara langsung dan praktis tanpa harus berkutat dengan angka, simbol, rumus dan persamaan.
