In Quebec, a protected area is defined as "a territory, in a terrestrial or aquatic environment, geographically delimited, whose legal framework and administration aim specifically to ensure the protection and maintenance of biological diversity and of associated natural and cultural resources. The protected areas of Quebec covered, as of November 11, 2013, an area of 152,371.60 kilometres (94,679.32 mi), or 9.14% of the territory. The Quebec has about twenty legal designations and more than 2,500 sites designated as protected areas. Au Québec, une aire protégée est définie comme étant « un territoire, en milieu terrestre ou aquatique, géographiquement délimité, dont l’encadrement juridique et l’administration visent spécifiquement à assurer la protection et le maintien de la diversité biologique et des ressources naturelles et culturelles associées ». Les quelque 5000 aires protégées du Québec couvraient, en date du 31 mars 2021, une superficie de 271 593 km2, soit 16,70 % du territoire terrestre et 12,22 % du territoire marin et côtier.
