Suzanne Oparil is a clinical cardiologist and Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Professor of Cell, Developmental, and Integrative Biology. She is the Section Chief of Vascular Biology and Hypertension and the Director of the Vascular Biology and Hypertension Program of the Division of Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) Medical School. Oparil earned an A.B. in Zoology from Cornell University in 1961 and continued on to earn her medical degree in 1965, graduating in the top of her class from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. After receiving further training at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and completing her residency and cardiology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Oparil obtained her first faculty position at the University of Chicago in 1971. In 1975, she was promoted to Associate Professor before leaving the University of Chicago in 1977. It was in 1977 that Dr. Oparil began her work at the University of Alabama-Birmingham as an Associate Professor until her promotion to Professor in 1981.
