However, by March 2010, this procurement programme had evolved to become the Global Combat Ship, following the announcement of a four-year, £127 million design contract being awarded to BAE Systems Maritime – Naval Ships. The design passed Main Gate 1 in early 2015, with the Demonstration Phase starting 1 April 2015. Program vývoje a stavby těchto plavidel řídí britské Ministerstvo obrany, vývoj probíhá v loděnicích koncernu BAE Systems, který zajišťuje i jejich stavbu. Britksé námořnictvo objednalo osm jednotek této třídy. Stavba britských fregat byla zahájena roku 2017. Zařazení prototypu do služby je plánováno na rok 2025. Fregata je také nabízena k exportu.
