There is also a miscellaneous category of recruiting songs, anti-pacifist songs, complaints about mess rations, excessive drilling and so on. Many national anthems are either a call to arms, or a celebration of military victories and past glories. There were a handful of anti-war songs before 1939, but this category has grown enormously since the start of the Vietnam War. On the other hand, new songs that are pro-war are becoming less common. Les travaux concernant ces répertoires ont été bien avancés en ce qui concerne les armées anglo-saxonnes. Il existe de nombreux recueils de chants militaires allemands et suisses. Les Russes ont enregistré les répertoires des anciennes armées tsaristes, les travaux manquent pour les répertoires espagnols et italiens. La musique n'a pas de frontière, par exemple lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la chanson Lili Marleen composée en Allemagne a connu un tel succès qu'elle a été reprise par tous les belligérants.
