Debut\u00F3 en la selecci\u00F3n nacional el 27 de octubre de 1968, con un triunfo por 3-0 sobre Rumania, jugando por la Copa del Mundo. Sali\u00F3 al campo como sustituto de Ant\u00F3nio Sim\u00F5es, y consigui\u00F3 anotar un tanto. Falt\u00F3 en el equipo que jug\u00F3 la Copa Independencia del Brasil en 1972. Jug\u00F3 por \u00FAltima vez para el equipo nacional portugu\u00E9s el 3 de abril de 1974, en Lisboa durante un partido amistoso contra Inglaterra que acab\u00F3 con el resultado 0-0. Con el Vit\u00F3ria de Set\u00FAbal jug\u00F3 14 temporadas, anotando 66 tantos en 268 juegos. El mejor resultado de su carrera fue el segundo lugar en el campeonato nacional, en la temporada 1971/72. Fue uno de los pocos grandes jugadores portugueses de f\u00FAtbol de su generaci\u00F3n que nunca jug\u00F3 para el Benfica, Sporting de Lisboa o Porto.
