Forty-five of his songs are extant. The twelve that still have melodies bear testament to the deserved nature of his musical reputation. There is no contemporary reference to Peire outside of his works of poetry. His vida (a short Occitan biography)\u2014composed about fifty years after his death\u2014and two razos (short commentaries on specific poems) are probably fictionalised works built on episodes from his poems. Only the opening line of the vida is probably reliable. It says that he \"was from Toulouse, the son of a furrier\": si fo de Tolosa, fils d'un pelissier. The fur and leather industry was well established in Toulouse, near the church of Saint Pierre des Cuisines, in the twelfth century. The rest of the vida is mostly invention based on Peire's poems, but it does contain the only reference to Peire having a wife: ...he took a Greek woman who had been given to him in marriage in Cyprus; and he claimed that she was the niece of the Emperor of Constantinople and through her he should have the right to the Empire. He gathered together all he could obtain to make ships, in order to set out to conquer the empire. This fantastic story may be based on the historical marriage of Thierry of Flanders and the Damsel of Cyprus, who together laid claim to Cyprus in 1203. Peire started his career, along with the troubadour , at the court of Count Raymond V of Toulouse around 1176. He continued there until 1190, when he left to seek another patron after quarrelling with the count. Many of his early poems were addressed to Vierna de Porcellet, a relative of the count's. In some poems Peire, Vierna and Raymond form a love triangle. From Toulouse Peire went to the court of King Alfonso II of Aragon, where he remained in good favour until the king's death in 1196. Afterward he continued to occasionally visit the court of Alfonso's son, Peter II. In the rivalry between the rulers of Toulouse and Aragon, Peire took the side of Aragon. He visited the court of King Alfonso VIII of Castile at Toledo in 1195 and intermittently thereafter until 1201. He also stayed for a time at the court of King Alfonso IX of Le\u00F3n, where the Galician\u2013Portuguese lyric was favoured over the Occitan. Among Peire's many lesser patrons were Lord William VIII of Montpellier and his wife, the Byzantine princess Eudokia Komnene. (William was both a vassal of Peter II and his father-in-law.) Peire attended the Aragonese court during some of its visits to Narbonne, but although the ruling viscountess of that city, Ermengarde, was a notable patron of troubadours (like Azalais de Porcairagues) there is no indication that she patronised Peire or that he wrote songs for her. Peire was also associated with Raimon Jaufre Barral, viscount of Marseille and brother-in-law of Vierna. Barral's son-in-law, , was a patron of Peire Vidal. Fils d\u2019une famille ais\u00E9e de Toulouse, ce troubadour est \u00E0 la fois un po\u00E8te de l\u2019amour et un homme public : options politiques et amours tumultueuses sont \u00E9troitement li\u00E9es. Esprit libre et ind\u00E9pendant, il s\u2019instaure en conseiller des suzerains, et son franc parler lui vaut quelques revers du destin. Son \u0153uvre \u00E0 l\u2019esth\u00E9tique travaill\u00E9e et pr\u00E9sente, \u00E9mouvante, l\u00E9g\u00E8re, nous conserve l\u2019image d\u2019un amoureux \u00E9ternel mais \u00E0 chaque fois passionn\u00E9 et sinc\u00E8re ; elle amorce aussi une nouvelle forme de l\u2019art des troubadours. Cette affaire faisant grand bruit en Provence, le troubadour toulousain part pour la Gr\u00E8ce. Il y \u00E9pouse une tr\u00E8s jolie fille qu\u2019il croit \u00EAtre la ni\u00E8ce de l\u2019empereur de Constantinople et, fort de cette conviction, il d\u00E9pense une fortune \u00E0 armer une flotte destin\u00E9e \u00E0 conqu\u00E9rir son \u00AB empire en attente d\u2019h\u00E9ritage \u00BB. Il est ainsi, Peire Vidal ! M\u00E9prisant les avares, il d\u00E9pense sans compter\u2026 l\u2019argent de ses protecteurs. A son retour en France, il se brouille avec Raymond V qui lui interdit l\u2019entr\u00E9e dans Toulouse. Leur d\u00E9saccord va durer pendant quelques ann\u00E9es au cours desquelles ils vont se battre \u00E0 coups de mots. Mais la profonde amiti\u00E9 n\u2019est pas atteinte et les beaux jours reviennent. Lorsque Raymond V meurt en 1194, Peire Vidal, en signe de deuil, s\u2019habille de noir, fait couper les oreilles et la crini\u00E8re de ses chevaux et oblige ses serviteurs \u00E0 se laisser pousser barbe et ongles. Lors d\u2019un s\u00E9jour en Provence, le turbulent troubadour vit un grand amour qui fait scandale avec la belle Vierna, vraisemblablement fille d\u2019Arles.
