"Samuel Chenery Damon (February 15, 1815 \u2013 February 7, 1885) was a missionary to Hawaii, pastor of the Seamen's Bethel Church, chaplain of the Honolulu American Seamen's Friend Society and editor of the monthly newspaper The Friend. He began his religious studies at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1838-39, and graduated from Andover Theological Seminary in 1841 after which he was ordained to the Congregational ministry. His work in Hawaii began on October 19, 1842, under the help and support of the American Seaman's Friend Society. He was the pastor of Bethel Church for 42 years (1841 to 1882), where he preached every Sunday, not only to sailors but also to merchants, sea captains and many others who were drawn to this well-known place of worship. The Seamen's Bethel Church burned down in 1886, one year after Damon's death.[8] The congregation has since evolved into the \"Central Union Church\" of Honolulu."@en . . . . .
